A Brief Biography of Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche

Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche was born in Peka, eastern Bhutan. His father was the most famous and great nyingmapa master Thinley Norbu Rinpoche. His grandfather was head of the Nyingmapa lineage the second Dudjom Rinpoche. His maternal grand father was the famous tantric yogi Sonam Zangpo Rinpoche, one of chief disciples of the most renowned Sakya Shri (a great yogi of the Drupa Kagyud lineage).

Emanation of Bodhisattva Manjushri, the Tibetan King Trisong Deutsen’s human-deva blood lineage transmitted through the second Dudjom Rinpoche to Thinley Norbu Rinpoche is now transmitted to Garab Dorje Rinpoche. Thus this blood lineage transmitted through father and son is unbroken, pure and untainted and has the most powerful blessing.

Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche has to shoulder the burden of carrying on the Dudjom lineage since the age of nineteen. In Bhutan, Rinpoche conducts Annual Grand Dorje Phurba Puja, Group Practice of Krodikali and grant major empowerments of various practices. Since the year 2007, Rinpoche has conducted the “Dakini Krodikali Hundred Thousand Tsogs” and group practice with ten thousand people in Bodhgaya, the most holy place where Buddha attained enlightenment.
Since childhood Rinpoche had received Dharma teachings especially the “Dudjom New Treasure” lineage teachings from his father (also his root-guru) Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche.

In the year 2009, on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche returned to this holy land after a lapse of more than ten years. Innumerous disciples, despite difficult journeys and long distances, gathered to meet Rinpoche and hear his Dharma.

Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche was personal attendant to Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche just like a small child serving his father. Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche was very touched and most surprised to see that in this short ten over years, Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche has constructed not only the Rangjung Oser Monastery, but many retreat centers , yogi temples, nunneries, Buddhist institute and young monks training centers all over Bhutan. Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche also noticed that Dharma activities of Dungsey Garab Dorje Rinpoche has spread widely all over Bhutan. In every state over Bhutan there is a Dharma center whose main practice is of the Dudjom lineage, lamas, nuns, yogis, yoginis, lay practitioners, all of them are following the Dudjom lineage practices and specially the Dakini Krodikali Chod practice.
Dudjom Rinpoche’s prophecy that “Dudjom New Treasure shall be widely spread through the practice of Dakini Krodikali” has in fact come true.
Turning the wheel of wisdom Dharma of the Dudjom New Treasure for the benefits of all mother sentient beings has been Rinpoche’s compassionate wish. To propagate widely the Dudjom New Treasure lineage more so is his responsibility. With the blessings of the lineage mandala, it is hope that Rinpoche will turn the wheel of Dharma for the sake of all beings endlessly.

The Compassionate Wish of His Eminence Dungse Garab Rinpoche

Rinpoche’s Mission to Spread the Dudjom New Treasure Lineage

For years, Dungse Garab Rinpoche has been relentlessly committing himself to spreading the teachings of Dudjom New Treasure, especially the practice of Chod of the Black Wrathful Dakini. By now in Bhutan there are already 25 Chod practice groups that range from 500 to over 1000 members each. There are also Chod groups and centers in Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Malaysia has the highest number of Chod groups and practitioners outside Bhutan. Every year, Rinpoche visits the centers and groups upon the invitation of his disciples and conducts pujas, teachings and retreats. Rinpoche is thus traveling all over the world for the whole year for the sake of his disciples’ practice and of spreading the lineage.

At the same time he is always easy and spontaneous in style, yet strict and profound in meaning, able to teach his disciples according to their different affinities and eventually leading them to the path of practicing holy Dharma. It is really due to our great luck and accumulated merit that we can meet such a compassionate and egoless Rinpoche, of such an authentic and noble lineage, who has dedicated his life to his lineage and teaching as well as to his disciples’ practice.
Benefiting mother-like sentient beings by turning the Wisdom Dharma Wheel of Dudjom New Treasure is not only Rinpoche’s compassionate wish- it is also is also his foremost responsibility to spread the teaching of Dudjom New Treasure. We supplicate Dungse Garab Rinpoche to always turn the Dharma wheel and guide all sentient beings to perfect their merit and wisdom and attain ultimate enlightenment.

Dudjom New Treasure

Before his Parinirvana, Buddha Sakyamurni predicted that “112 years after my passing, the secret mantrayana teachings shall be propagated in this world to benefit beings of the Dark Age”. As according to the prophecy and at the supplications of the Dakinis, Guru Padmasambhava took birth upon a lotus in the north-west country of Urgyen and propagated the secret mantrayana teachings. At the invitation of the then Tibetan King Trisong Deutsen, Guru Padmasambhava went to Tibet and spread the teachings of the secret mantrayana. The teachings were widely spread in Tibet and became known as the Nyingmapa (the old translation) lineage. This lineage had two main branches:

1)The Long Lineage: This lineage teaching was handed down from teachers to disciples since Guru Padmasambhava’s time till the present time.
2)The Short lineage or Terma Lineage:
a)Terma refers to teachings that were written by Guru Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal hidden in various ways in space, in rocks, under ground, under water, in the mind, in fire, etc. These hidden teachings (terma) are guarded by the Dakinis and Dharma Protectors to be revealed at a later time by terton (treasure revealer) as prophesied by Guru Padmasambhava himself to benefit beings at the appropriate time.
b)Terma teachings are precious not only because it is from Guru Padmasambhava directly, but also because it is especially kept for beings of the appropriate time. Because the lineage is short and fresh, it is pure and untainted, thus having great blessings.
c) Because of special connection great terton must fulfill the following conditions: 1) The terma that was revealed must be complete in itself that contains teachings that will lead sentient beings towards full enlightenment and liberation. 2) It must be complete with great perfection teachings of “Lama, Yidam and Khandro”.

The terma teachings of Guru Padmasambhava consist of terma of the east, west, south, north and central. The “Dudjom New Treasure” belongs to terma of the east, just like the root system of a tree it is a deep, firm and strong foundation for the healthy growth of the whole tree.

Dudjom Rinpoche himself said: “The Dudjom New Treasure lineage is the heart and essential teachings of the Dakinis.” This terma lineage is extremely short. The ‘warmth’of the Dakini’s breath has still not dissipated and thus carries incredibly great blessing. Thus it is popularly said that it is the most precious and the golden key to enlightenment in this present time.

The Dudjom New Treasure teachings are clear and complete in themselves. Its practice texts are simple and profound, systematic and graduated paths are clear and complete with all the pith instructions.

Guru Padmasambhava prophesied that:”more than one hundred thousands people who practice this terma will obtain realization in one life.” (samaya breakers excepted)
Significance of Dudjom Dharma
Dudjom New Treasure is the heart essence of Dakinis, and because the transmission is very short, the breath of Dakini lingers on, containing enormous pure blessing power. The Dharma activities will spread wide and those who practice it will enjoy abundant success in worldly activities and wealth. If they keep their samaya vows, eventually all their obstacles and obscurations will be destroyed and liberation is attained.

During the time of Dudjom Rinpoche the Second, the teachings of Dudjom New Treasure not only flourished in India, China and Tibet, but also spread widely in the West. Retreat centers were built in countries like France and the US. Especially in the remote areas of Bhutan, practitioners in the mountains had not heard of any other Buddhadharma but the teachings of Dudjom New Treasure. Such great influence of the Dudjom New Treasure teachings was naturally difficult to maintain after Dudjom Rinpoche’s passing parinirvana. Thus at the tender age of 19 Dungse Garab Rinpoche took up the heavy responsibility to revive the spread of Dudjom lineage.

Origins of the Dudjom New Treasure Lineage

The origins of the Dudjom New Treasure Lineage can be traced back to Dharmakaya Samantabhadra Buddha. Samantabhadra Buddha transmitted it to Vajrasattva who then transmitted to Garab Dorje, then to Manjusrimitra, Sri Singha and Padmasambhava. Padmasambhava then transmitted the teachings to His consort Yeshe Tsogyal who transmitted to Dudjom Lingpa (The 1st Dudjom). Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (The 2nd Dudjom) then received the transmission from Dudjom Lingpa’s heart son Jigme Nedun Wangpo. The 2nd Dudjom Rinpoche transmitted the terma of Dudjom Lingpa together with that of his own discovery to Dungse Garab Dorje Rinpoche. Thus Dungse Garab Dorje Rinpoche presently holds the blood lineage as well as the Dharma lineage of the Dudjom Rinpoche.

The Dudjom New Treasure is one of many termas transmitted by Guru Padmasambhava during the ninth century and to be propagated at this time of degeneration. This is the most profound and appropriate teaching for this period of time to purify the negative emotions of sentient and to obtain liberation. Amongst the termas of Guru Padmasambhava, the termas obtained by Dudjom Lingpa and the 2nd Dudjom Rinpoche are the latest and nearest to this period of time. Thus is called the Dudjom New Treasure.

The special and profound qualities of the Dudjom New Treasure

1)The Dudjom New Treasure was directly taught by Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal, so the lineage is very short. It is pure and fresh with great blessing, which means the lineage warmth has not dissipated.
2)The Dudjom New Treasure teachings are clear and complete in themselves. Its practice texts are simple and profound, graduated paths are clear and complete. It appears to be simple but once one enters the path, other paths become clear and easily realized.
3)The Dudjom New Treasure has complete teachings for accomplishment in one life for all sentient beings.
4)The gradual stages of practice are systematic and most important of all it is complete with all the profound secret pith instructions.
5)The Dudjom New Treasure: “Dud” means the five poisons, conflicting emotions, maras; “jom” means cut-off, eliminate, destroy. The Dudjom terma for this period of time is a system of teachings for followers of the lineage to cut samsara from its root, eliminate conflicting emotions and obtain liberation in this very life. It is widely acclaimed to be a crown jewel for quick liberation among the Vajrayana in modern time.

The Dudjom New Treasure Lineage is clear and complete in itself in all aspects.

The Dudjom New Treasure Lineage has complete and clear records of each lineage holders. The First Dudjom Rinpoche Dudjom Lingpa was a great terton. At the age of 25, Padmasambhava, Yeshe Tsogyal and several Dakinis instructed him to reveal treasure teachings. This terma revealed by Dudjom Lingpa is known as The Dudjom New Treasure and can be classified 4 classes of teachings. The first three are “mind treasure” and the fourth is “ground treasure”, all together 20 volumes.

1)“Essence of Wisdom of the Pure State”: practice of dakini Krodikali is the main practice. The second Dudjom Rinpoche prophesied that in the future, The Dudjom New Treasure lineage shall be widely propagated based on the teachings of the Dakini Krodikali.

3)“Treasure of Vast Space Dharmata”: This comprises mainly the practice of Trechok, Thogal and the Great Perfection.

Great terton Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, the second Dudjom Rinpoche, was able to have direct communication with Guru Padmasambhava, Yeshe Tsogyal and other great masters. He knew many spots where treasure teachings were hidden and would reveal them at the appropriate time. Within the Dudjom New Treasure, he also had four classes of terma, all of which are “mind treasure”. This has 25 volumes.

2)“Destroying with a Blade”: The practice of Dorje Phurba.
3)“Heart Instruction of The Dakini”: This is the practices of the Dakini’s outer, inner, secret and extremely secret heart-essence.
